Application of Explosives
Discover how explosives impact the surrounding world with fragmentation and crater formation
Application of Explosives covers a wide range of subjects which are geared towards those being introduced to explosive engineering. In this course, Dr. Anthony Konya breaks down the complex world of explosives into the basic fundamentals which are blast waves, fragmentation, and cratering. The course begins with two discussions on how explosive experimentation and most explosive data is developed. In addition to this introduction to experimental design, Dr. Konya discusses the following major topics:
- Explosive Fragmentation - this includes both the Gurney Model and Mott's Distribution to determine the size distribution and velocity of fragments coming from a variety of explosive situations
- Blast Waves - this section includes a discussion on blast waves in air and blast waves in water, along with methods to calculate the pressures produced from explosives at different distances
- Explosive Craters - in this section the discussion turns to the effects that explosives have in the development of craters from a variety of different explosive scenarios
- Misc. Explosive Uses - this section wraps up the course covering explosive welding and t the background of shaped charges
This course contains four hours of in-depth explosive engineering content focused on the application of explosives. This course is Section 4 of the Explosive Engineering 1 program and can be completed individually for with the entire course bundle.
Your Instructor
Dr. Anthony Konya is an explosive engineer with worldwide experience in drilling and blasting for surface, underground, and underwater blasting projects. Anthony has extensive experience in blast design, ground vibration, air overpressure, unintentional detonation of explosives, effects of explosives on structures and has applied these skills in the mining, construction, and defense industries.
Anthony holds a PhD in Explosive Engineering from Missouri S&T, as well as numerous other advanced degrees in engineering. He has over 50 publications in explosive engineering and developed modern presplit blasting theory. Anthony is the Vice President of Precision Blasting Services, a drill and blast consulting firm, the Founder and CEO of Academy Blasting, and an instructor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
